How did you parent-teacher conference go this year? Our children all have different strengths and talents, but no one knows your child better than you. So while it’s normal for kids to vary in their performance at school, sometimes your child’s poor scores just don’t sit quite right with you. If it seems like there’s something else affecting your child, you might be right.

As a parent, it’s important to listen to that little voice so we can make sure that our children have all the fundamental building blocks that they need to set them up for success. After all, being our children’s advocate is our most important job, even — and perhaps especially — when it’s hard to tell that they might need help!

If your child is struggling in school, especially in math, spelling, or science, they might just be desperate for a better night’s sleep. It sounds simplistic, but in fact it’s anything but. Of course, you always make sure your child gets their eight hours of shut-eye each night, but the real danger is that they might be cheated out of the rest they need, even while they appear fast asleep in bed.

Have you noticed your child snoring, or breathing through their mouth at night? Have you ever seen your child’s breathing pause while they sleep? Signs like these could indicate that your child’s airway is obstructed and they are having trouble breathing clearly while they sleep which, as you can imagine, is not conducive to a restful night!

As many as 9 in 10 children exhibit the symptoms of Sleep Disordered Breathing, and as the research continues to mount up, experts are beginning to recognize it as a silent epidemic among our children.

What child can give their best performance on times tables and the watershed cycle when they are in a state of constant exhaustion? Sleep plays a fundamental role in the way we learn, and it’s crucial for all sorts of important processes like memory formation, problem solving, language learning, and other high level brain functions — in short, things that are vital when you’re doing the important work of discovering how the world works. It’s no surprise, then, that compromised breathing during sleep shows up directly in a child’s grades. For kids who are falling behind in math and science, especially early on in grades 1-3, the real source of their poor performance can often be traced to fatigue.

Luckily, there are solutions for you and your child! The Healthy Start system offers non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical treatment for children suffering from Sleep Disordered Breathing. We work to address the root cause, not just the symptoms, and secure a good night’s sleep for your children not only now, but for the rest of their lives. Early intervention is absolutely crucial. Correcting the problem now, before their connective fibers develop fully and lock in and the airway stops developing, can have a huge impact on your child’s life.

We’ve seen real, meaningful improvement for children who have their breathing corrected with Healthy Start. Often, children’s math, science and spelling scores shoot up after treatment because, for the first time, they have all the cognitive resources and energy that they need for successful learning.

That’s why I am such a passionate practitioner of the Healthy Start system — and why all three of my own young children are Healthy Start kids too. Because I want every child to have the healthiest possible chance to learn and grow! If you think your child could benefit as well, I’d love to talk about what’s right for your child!
